DelVal to host microbiology teachers conference

May 26, 2010

Delaware Valley College will host the 7th Annual Delaware/Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Microbiology Educators Network Meeting on Thursday, June, 3.

The Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Microbiology Educators Network was started by Dr. Amy Cheng Vollmer of Swarthmore College seven years ago. Dr. Vollmer was the only Prokaryotic biologist on campus at the time and wanted to build a network of educators with whom she could share her work and ideas. Today the group includes approximately 40 educators.

The theme of this year's conference is applying critical thinking to science education.

Eric Krieg, the featured speaker, loves to question ideas and assumptions. Krieg is the president of The Philadelphia Association for Critical Thinking, which he helped found. The group believes that what hurts you more is not what you don't know but what you know that isn't so.

It encourages the responsible scientific investigation of paranormal and fringe-science claims.

Krieg is also an electrical engineer and volunteer for the DelVal Science Fair.

The conference will be held in the Coffeehouse on the second floor of the Student Center at 9:00 a.m.

Dr. Cynthia Keler of the Biology Department and Dr. Anabelle Morales of the Food Science Department are hosting the event.

If you would like to attend the conference, contact Dr. Morales at 215-489-2282
