Science Fair Projects Could Put Students Through College

For local high school students competing in the 2018 Bucks County Science Research Competition from March 12 through March 14, taking first place could be life-changing. Eligible students who win first in the Biochemistry and Chemistry categories will walk away with full scholarships to Delaware Valley University, where the competition is being held. The University is also planning to offer generous merit-based scholarships to winners of other categories in the competition.

“The merit scholarships are reflective of DelVal's commitment to local students pursuing careers in the various fields of study represented at the competition, and the University’s confidence in their ability to succeed in the rigorous science offerings at the University,” said Dwayne Walker, DelVal’s interim vice president for enrollment management.

DelVal President Dr. Maria Gallo, who has a background in plant science, will be addressing the future scientists at the event.

Competition Schedule:
All fair events will occur at Delaware Valley University in the James Work and Rudley Neumann Gymnasiums.

Scholarship Prizes:

Full-Tuition Scholarships 
Eligible first-place finishers in the Chemistry and Biochemistry categories will receive full-tuition scholarships to Delaware Valley University. The full–tuition scholarships are renewable for four academic years of study at the University (eight semesters). The full-tuition scholarship winners must be high school seniors and enroll at DelVal as first-year undergraduate students.

Heritage Awards 
The University will offer a generous merit scholarship, the Heritage Award, worth $56,000 over four years ($14,000 annually), to the next place finishers (2nd, 3rd, and honorable mention) competing in the Biochemistry and Chemistry categories. The Heritage Award will also be offered to the winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd and honorable mention) of each of the remaining high school-level categories, including behavioral and social science, botany, computer science, earth and space science, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, medicine and health, microbiology, physics, zoology and team projects.  

To be eligible for the Heritage Awards, students must be high school seniors in good academic standing and apply, be offered admission to, and enroll at DelVal in the fall of 2018; or be high school juniors in good academic standing, and remain in good academic standing in their senior year of high school; apply, be offered admission to and enroll at DelVal in the fall of 2019. Eligible students will be required to show proof of their achievement in the competition at the time of application. Students are eligible for one academic scholarship at the University. A student will be granted the highest of any offer of institutional merit scholarship.
