Local equestrian team beats the top 20 East Coast college teams

Dec 14, 2010

Our equestrian team took first place in the prestigious annual Holiday Tournament of Champions held Dec. 4 at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C.

The team of seven riders, competing in eight team classes, beat the top 20 teams on the East Coast, including Skidmore College, the reigning Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Champions,  as well as past national champions such as Mount Holyoke and Virginia Intermont College.

St. Andrews started the day as if it would be a blowout for the home team, winning the first two classes in a row and three of the first five.

The traditional front- runners, Virginia Intermont and Mount Holyoke, mounted strong comebacks, but the Doylestown team snuck up to quietly steal the lead late in the tournament.

DelVal was named Tournament Champion, finishing with 28 points and beating Skidmore by seven points.

The host team, St. Andrews, was named Reserve Champion. Virgina Intermont College took third place with 26 points and Virginia Tech took fourth with 24 points.

The DelVal Riders were: Ciara Menkens (team captain), Kelsey Ficara, Kristin Lawrence, Chelsea Koerper, Sarah Mallon, Gianna Grupp and Melissa Milligan.
