DelVal to host a screening and director discussion of ‘The North Star’

Delaware Valley University’s History and Policy Studies program and Minority Relations Council are pleased to present a screening of the award-winning film, “The North Star.” After the screening, Dr. Craig Stutman, assistant professor of history and policy studies, will facilitate a discussion with the filmmaker, Thomas K. Phillips.

“The North Star” shares the true story of Big Ben and Moses Hopkins, two men who were enslaved on a Virginia plantation. They escaped from the plantation by heading north. On their way, they were sheltered and aided by both Quakers and African-Americans from Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

The screening will be held on Monday, Feb. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Life Sciences Building auditorium on the University’s main campus in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. There is no cost to attend and the event is open to the public. Guests do not need to register in advance.

• Jeremiah Trotter, a former Philadelphia Eagle, stars in the film.
• The filmmaker, Thomas K. Phillips, was born and raised in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. He wrote, produced and directed “The North Star.”
• It was filmed in Bucks County, where the actual historical events took place.
• The film is scheduled to be distributed digitally and will become available for sale to the general public on March 1, 2016. After March 1, it will be sold through Wal-Mart and Amazon. It will also be available on disc through Netflix and sold digitally on services such as iTunes, Amazon and GooglePlay.
