The Delaware Valley College community gathered to remember its beginnings and to celebrate its future on April 10 at Founders’ Day, an annual college tradition.

At the ceremony, DelVal recognizes the achievements of students, and the leadership of the faculty, staff, and administrators who have made a difference in their lives.

The institution was founded in Doylestown by Rabbi Dr. Joseph Krauskopf, a social activist and visionary, who believed in the individual’s responsibility to create positive change.

He addressed issues decades before much of the world, including human and civil rights, slums, child labor, conservation, poverty, housing reforms, equal and full employment, proper education and quality of life improvement.

Current students share that same spirit and sense of personal responsibility at the College.

Chair of the DelVal Board of Trustees Dr. Jim Trainer, an alumnus of the College, said Founders’ Day is about remembering the past, but also a day to “turn an eye to the future and imagine what our honorees today, our students and faculty, will achieve in the future and how society will benefit.”

The Founders’ Day Award, one of the most prestigious at DelVal, is presented each year to a senior who demonstrates outstanding leadership ability and involvement within the campus and community throughout his or her time at DelVal.

This year, there were 21 nominees and eight finalists for the award.

Shanae Ninehouser, a biology major, was this year’s recipient. Ninehouser is president of the Class of 2013 and very involved in the clubs and organizations on campus. She’s also the supervisor in the small animal laboratories on campus.

“DelVal has offered me the atmosphere to thrive and transition into the woman I am today…” said Ninehouser in her interview with the selection committee. “The people I surround myself with here are my family and the campus has become my home.”
