Delaware Valley University to host a screening of ‘Real Boy’

The award-winning documentary “Real Boy” follows the journey of a son’s gender transition and his mother’s road to acceptance. Delaware Valley University will be hosting a screening of the film, followed by a faculty-led discussion on Tuesday, March 27 at 5:30 p.m. in the Life Sciences Building auditorium. The event is open to the public at no cost and guests do not need to register in advance.

Dr. Audrey Ervin, academic program director of DelVal’s graduate counseling psychology program and a Doylestown-based psychologist, specializes in working with transgender and gender variant individuals and their families. Dr. Ervin is helping to organize the event. 

"There are many misconceptions about gender identity,” said Dr. Ervin. “Gender variant adolescents often face invalidation, misunderstanding, rejection, stigma, and discrimination that can impact psychological well-being. Being a teenager is tough. Being a transgender teenager presents its own set of unique challenges. It is important for adults to gain accurate information about gender identity and create affirming spaces for adolescents of all gender identities and expression. I encourage parents, teachers and anyone who works with teens to attend this interactive discussion."

The film follows the journey of a trans teenager as he navigates his gender transition, sobriety and the challenges of adolescence. Along the way, his mother learns to accept her son and grows as a parent. 

The forum is being sponsored by The Graduate Counseling Psychology Speaker Series, the Minority Relations Council, and the GLOW (Gay Lesbian or Whatever) student group. 

Tickets: Guests do not need to register in advance and there is no charge for admission. All are welcome.
