Delaware Valley University Team Competes at National Dairy Judging Contest

Delaware Valley University students attended and competed at the World Dairy Expo National Intercollegiate Dairy Judging contest on Oct. 1. The students performed well as a team and in the individual portion of the contest. 

Four students Amanda Wengryn ’19 (dairy science), Madison Jackson ’21 (agribusiness), Lindsay Smith ’19 (animal science), and Mary Lawrence ’19 (agribusiness) coached by Assistant Dairy Superintendent Ethan Arsenault ’17 placed ninth overall in a competition with 22 different colleges and universities. The team as a whole was also fifth place on Red and Whites. 

“The students worked really hard to improve from our first contest earlier in the year to this contest,” said Arsenault. “They really excelled in what they were doing and grew so much as a team and gained so many experiences. They visited five to six different farms where they were able to network and gain experience.”

The team also had several individual placings. 

Smith and Wengryn were both in the top 25 considered All-American Contestants eligible for scholarships. Smith was fourteenth and Wengryn was seventeenth. Smith was also the eighth-place individual on Brown Swiss and Jackson was the fifth-place individual on Red and Whites. Wengryn was fifth high in individual placings only. 

The contest consisted of 12 total placings classes where students evaluate four cows per class. They also had to give six sets of oral reasons, where they have two minutes to defend their placings from memory in front of a judge.
