What Do I Do After College? Tips for Finding Your Way and Getting Started After Graduation

Posted on May 2, 2016 by Delaware Valley University.

There's a small number of college students who know exactly what they want to do and where they want to be after graduating from Delaware Valley University, but that's not the case for everyone. Some graduates aren't sure what type of career they want or even where they want to live.

If you fall under the second category, you're not alone. Don't get discouraged because you don't have your entire future planned out. Instead, focus on what you can do right now for a more successful future.

What to Do Before Graduation

You may not be sure of your post-graduate plans, but before you graduate, you should make sure that you're prepared for the future, no matter what it may hold.

Before classes end for the year, take a trip to the admission office and request a copy of your transcripts. You'll need them if you ever consider attending graduate school and furthering your education, and it's easier to have them on hand than to request them later.

In addition to transcripts, you may want to obtain letters of reference while you're still at your college. Whether you had a good relationship with your advisor or excelled in a certain professor's class, you should speak with them about adding them as a reference. Having references from trusted professionals at your college or university can go a long way when it comes to post-graduate employment or being accepted into a graduate school program.

Take Advantage of Your College's Resources

Most colleges and universities have career centers where students go for help with crafting résumés, looking for jobs and learning interview tips, such as DelVal's Center for Student Professional Development.

After spending some time in a center like DelVal's, you'll walk away with more resources than you had before, such as a polished résumé and cover letter. Immersing yourself in a job search and speaking with professionals at the center may even help you discover career goals you weren't aware of previously.

Make sure to take advantage of this before graduation.

Figure Out Your Immediate Next Steps

You have the rest of your life to figure out what you want to do when you "grow up," but for now, it's crucial that you at least have your next steps planned out. If you're not sure where you'll be living after graduation, consider your options and figure out what you need to do in order to make one of them happen.

If you're considering graduate school, determine which ones you'll be applying to and which programs you're interested in. You may also start applying for jobs to help you meet your financial goals, even if it's not your end career.
