Harvesting
Fresh Food and Fun
With the opening of The Market, the college opened
a new era in serving the local community.
Constructed on 20 acres of campus, The Market features
a post and beam Dutch Colonial building containing product
areas, a bakery, receiving and prep/work areas, and
office spaces. Construction plans call for the addition
of a classroom as well as a nursery/greenhouse for plants
and flowers.
From the heavenly smell of breads and pies, to the
just-picked goodness of fresh fruits and vegetables,
The Market is a heaven of homegrown, yet sophisticated
delights. Student-grown-and-prepared produce, meat,
dairy, and baked goods are offered along with gourmet
goodies from outside vendors.
Throughout the fall, winter, spring, and summer, The
Market offers family entertainment and learning opportunities.
Seasonal festivals, pick-your-own fields, farm tours,
and how-to demonstrations make The Market the local
destination for fresh-air fun. For educational programs,
The Market serves as a living outdoor classroom where
learning becomes part of an enjoyable day down on the
farm.
Bringing Education Down To Earth
From
seed to feed to the consumers table, Delaware Valley
College educates students in every facet of agriculture
and business. The Market provides a one-of-a-kind, hands-on
opportunity for the students in these and other areas
of study. Learning is brought down to earth, while real-life
experience is elevated to an unparalleled level of excellence.
Business Administrations majors can handle The Market’s
daily operations, including ordering, invoice processing,
staff management and marketing. In the kitchen, Food
Management majors can make sure supplies are available,
handle prep work and hire kitchen personnel. Horticultural
students can handle the daily care of orchards, vegetable
gardens, and other growables. Community outreach programs
can be organized and run by Education majors. A market
newsletter can be written and produced by Written Communication
majors, and the College’s Ornamental Horticulture
department can landscape The Market’s exterior
areas.
