Doylestown, PA -- (October 22, 2008) - In a world where the list of drug-resistant diseases continues to grow longer and longer, discovering new antibiotics is a complex process. Delaware Valley College will host Dr. Paul Lovett, professor emeritus of the University of Maryland at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 20 in Mandell 114 for a seminar titled "Strategies for Antibiotic Discovery."

According to Lovett, there have traditionally been two strategies followed in the discovery of new drugs: rational drug design and the classical approach of random testing of simple and complex molecules. While both strategies have been successful, random testing has been the only approach that has produced clinically successful antibiotics.

Considering that virtually all the classes of antibiotics currently in use were discovered during the "Golden Age" of antibiotic discovery from 1945 to 1960, it is clear that a new approach is needed.

According to Lovett, one new approach has recently been proposed that may open the door to establishing new classes of useful anti-microbial compounds; he will discuss that proposal during his presentation.

Lovett is a long-time researcher, molecular biologist and geneticist and expert on the structure and function of RNA and ribosome synthesis. Today, he continues to teach part-time at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, an honors university in Maryland. He earned his Ph.D., in 1968 from Temple University and completed postdoctoral work at the Scripps Clinic & Research Foundation.
