Study Abroad
The Liberal Arts Department is excited to announce a new Study Abroad opportunity in Berlin, Germany beginning in May 2012. Students will be able to complete up to 9 credits of required DelVal Core Curriculum courses (Modern Western Societies, US Foreign Policy, Introduction to the Arts) while spending 17 days in Berlin.
When does it start?
| May 21 | You take classes at DelVal (Summer I) for two weeks |
| June 1 | You leave for Belin |
| June 18 | You return to DelVal |
What is the cost?
You'll pay a fee of $2,600 in addition to the standard tuition/fees for 9 credits. This covers air transportation, airport transfers, housing, transportation within Germany, admission to concerts and historic sights, as well as travel insurance.
Breakfast is included in the above, but you are responsible for buying your lunch and dinner. There are quite a few inexpensive restaurants within a five-minute walk of the hotel.
How does it work?
You will alternate classroom meetings with group excursions to key historic and cultural locations. You'll have plenty of time to explore the city on your own as well!
Once you return, you have until July 1st to turn in all assignments and complete the requirements for the course.
Who is going?
Drs. Jack Schmidt and David Snyder will lead the program, with students capped at 20. Up to eight of you will be housed in dormitory style rooms in the hotel (male and female students in separate rooms).
Where will I stay?
You'll be staying in the Industriepalast Hotel/Hostel in the Friedrichshain section of Belin. Classes will be held in the hotel's public meeting space.
What will I study?
You'll examine the region’s important contributions to the political and cultural history of Western Europe, explore Germany’s key role in the development of modern Europe, and study America’s complex relationship and foreign policy with Germany.
You'll also explore important developments in art and music history focusing on the works of key composers, artists, and architects in Berlin and surrounding cities in Germany. The program will provide students a forum for exploring the interplay between history, politics, and culture and will provide invaluable insights that will re-shape the way they think about the world.
How do I Apply?
You will be selected to participate in the program on the basis of your maturity and overall academic performance to date. You are required to submit a recommendation from one of your professors, and provide your current GPA.
Applications are due November 15th. Remember, this is limited to 20 students, so get started now!
We will notify you of your acceptance into the program before November 30th.
