Sports organizations require the expertise of top business leaders, who are well educated in the business area to handle a variety of diversified responsibilities. The field of Sports Management, though relatively new as an academic discipline, has grown to become a reputable and established academic concentration. To be engaged in the field of sports management means working in a business.

Each day, the print and electronic media make public the current problems facing owners, school administrators, colleges and universities concerning sports administration. There are issues concerning salaries and salary caps, revenue sharing, player contracts, unions, new stadiums and other sports facilities, radio and television, food and drink concessions, ticket sales, promotion, marketing, public relations, parking, security and etc.
