Christopher Tipping
B.S., University of Delaware - Entomology/Plant Pathology
M.S., University of Delaware - Entomology and Systematics
Ph.D., University of Florida - Entomology and Nematology
Chris comes to us from the University of Florida's North Florida Research and Education Center (NFREC), where he was a post-doctoral researcher working on plant/insect interactions. While at NFREC, Chris was an undergraduate internship and research advisor. Additionally, he created lectures and displays relating to insect management for seasonal workshops directed to county extension agents, Master Gardeners, and the First Detectors program; an organization created to examine the threat of agricultural bio-terrorism.
Chris has researched a variety of insect systems, including mosquito oviposition behavior, biocontrol of insect pests, post harvest IPM, insect-vectored plant diseases as well as the systematics of soil arthropods. He has an extensive list of publications and book chapters to his credit and has also described several novel species of insects and nematodes. In addition to postdoctoral experience at the University of California, Davis, Chris has been an adjunct faculty member in the biology department at Arkansas State University. He has teaching experience with several entomology courses, including taxonomy and systematics, insect structure and function, economic entomology and an honors level course offered at UF entitled Natural History of Fireflies. Some of the courses Chris teaches at Delval include Biology I and II, Entomology, and Invertebrate Zoology and has been involved in several student research projects. As head curator for the Arthropod and Invertebrate museum, he also offers students the opportunity to learn about the finer points of systematics and museum curation for employment program hours. Chris is an active member in several scientific societies and has presented dozens of lectures at a variety of conferences. Additionally, he is the systematics editor for the scientific journal Florida Entomologist.
Chris serves on numerous faculty committees and is the faculty advisor for the Apiary Society as well as an assistant coach for our softball team here at DelVal. Chris has received the Student Government Faculty Service Award from DelVal’s student government association in 2010. Delaware Valley College welcomes Christopher Tipping as an associate professor in Biology and looks forward to a long, mutually-beneficial relationship.
