Wrestling: Division III Aggies Defeat Division II Shippensburg 38-10
Jan 29, 2009
Delaware Valley College, ranked third in Division III, defeated a nationally-ranked team for the eighth time this season, but Tuesday evening's match was against a highly touted Division II squad as the Aggies routed No. 16 Shippensburg University, 38-10.
The win improved Delaware Valley to 16-1-1 on the season. The Aggies will now head out to Iowa this weekend and battle three of the top 15 teams in Division III. On Friday, they will compete in a tri-match at Coe College with No. 15 Luther College and the fourth-ranked hosts (Delaware Valley already has a win this season against Coe thanks to a 22-15 triumph in the consolation finals of the National Duals). The following night, the Aggies will hit the mat at defending national champion and second-ranked Wartburg College. The four teams have a combined 24 wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their individual weight classes, including five for Delaware Valley.
The Aggies notched 34 of a possible 36 points in the first six weight classes thanks to two pins, two forfeits and two technical falls. The match began at 174 pounds where Rocky Mantella, ranked fifth in Division III, put his undefeated record on the line against 17-2 Chris Barrick. Mantella was dominant in a 20-5 technical fall victory that upped his record to 18-0 on the year.
Mike Wilcox, last year's 184-pound national runner-up who is currently ranked second in the country, improved his mark to 23-2 and gave the Aggies a 10-0 lead with a 17-1 technical fall triumph over Jon Hade. Jeff Siciliano followed at 197 pounds and, after building a 9-0 lead, he dropped Taylor Knight in 4:55 for his 17th win in 22 tries.
Delaware Valley was awarded a pair of forfeits in two of the next three weight classes as nationally-ranked wrestlers Kyle Bilquist (19-3) and Brandon Clemmer (21-5) added wins to their totals at heavyweight and 133 pounds respectively. In-between those two weight classes, Chris Sheetz started the second period on the bottom, flipped Justin Morris over and pinned him to the mat 20 seconds into the stanza. The win improved Sheetz, ranked fourth in Division III at 125 pounds, to 26-3 on the year.
Eric McCann gave the Aggies a 38-0 advantage as he used a big third period to turn a 5-4 lead into a 15-7 major decision over Tom Wiechelt at 141 pounds. The win was the 17th in 24 matches for McCann.
The Red Raiders (6-4-1) picked up all 10 of their points in the final three weight class. Nate Nauroth upped his mark to 7-5 with a 7-1 decision over Dale Fava at 149 pounds. David Sunderland (5-3) followed with a 11-1 major decision over Don Smith at 157 pounds, and Jake Wilson (13-10) used a reversal in the second rideout to earn a 3-1 victory over Justin Barokwsi at 165 pounds.
