Wrestling: Aggies Place Third in Division III National Duals

Jan 13, 2009

CEDAR FALLS (IA) - Delaware Valley College held its number three ranking in the country as the Aggies finished in third place at the NWCA/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals. Delaware Valley opened Sunday action with a 25-17 loss to No. 2 Augsburg College (MN) in the semifinals, but bounced back with a 22-15 triumph over fourth-ranked Coe College (IA) in the consolation finals.

It is the third consecutive year that the Aggies placed third at the National Duals. They went 3-1 at the two-day, prestigious event and improved their record to 10-1-1 on the season.

In years past, there has been a huge gap between Augsburg and Wartburg College and the rest of field at the Duals. This year, Delaware Valley College gave Augsburg quite a battle and won four of the 10 weight classes, but it was not enough for the victory.

The match started in great fashion as Chris Sheetz, ranked fifth in Division III at 125 pounds, earned a 9-3 decision over defending national champion and top-ranked Seth Flodeen. It is the second year in a row that Sheetz notched a win over the No. 1 ranked wrestler in his weight class as the sophomore downed Eracieo Valleio of Manchester in the finals of the 2008 Midwest Regionals.

However, Augsburg picked up 19 points in the next four weight classes to take a 16-point lead halfway through the match. Top-ranked Travis Lang began that spurt as he pinned 10th-ranked Brandon Clemmer in 1:57 at 133. Tony Valek then dropped ninth-ranked Eric MCann in 3:42 of their 141-pound contest. No. 2 Willy Holst followed with a 13-3 major decision over the Aggies' Dale Fava at 149, and fifth-ranked Jason Adams earned a 7-0 shutout over Robbie Hickman at 157.

Back came Delaware Valley with victories in the next three weight classes, including a pin and a technical fall. Justin Barowski recorded a 7-3 decision over Brandon Bahr at 165 and Rocky Mantella, ranked seventh at 174 pounds, needed just 82 seconds to pin Zach Molitor. Top-ranked Mike Wilcox hit the mat next for the Aggies and posted a 17-0 technical fall victory to cut the Augsburg lead to two, 19-17, with two weight classes remaining.

Delaware Valley's Jeff Siciliano met second-ranked Jared Massey at 197 pounds with Massey coming away with a 9-2 decision for a 22-17 lead. The Aggies needed to get a pin from No. 2 Kyle Bilquist at heavyweight to win the match (a technical fall would've tied the match but Augsburg would have advanced to the finals on criteria), but he was facing another nationally-ranked wrestler in No. 3 Andy Witzel. Witzel earned a 3-1 decision for the 25-17 final.

Delaware Valley then hit the mat against Coe and trailed 12-9 after six weight classes. However, the squad won three of the final four match-ups, including a pin and a major decision, to pull out the victory.

Mantella gave the Aggies the lead for good following his 17-3 major decision over Seth Rehn at 174. Wilcox then dropped Greg Lalla in 80 seconds to up the lead to 19-12. Coe's Rob Kramer picked up three points at 197 as the eighth-ranked wrestler notched a 4-2 decision over Martin Porter. That set the stage for another battle of ranked wrestlers at heavyweight and this time Bilquist prevailed with a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Mitch Sander.

The match started with a meeting of nationally-ranked wrestlers as Sheetz, fresh off the win over No. 1 Flodeen, faced No. 3 Clayton Rush. Rush pulled out a 12-7 decision for the early 3-0 lead for the Kohawsk. Clemmer earned six points for the Aggies at 133 as he pinned Brandon Ball in 3:25. Coe tied the match up at 141 but Delaware Valley regained the lead at 149 as Fava picked up a 4-1 decision over 10th-ranked Mark Carey.

The Kohawks took the next two weights to build their 13-12 lead before the Aggies rallied for the win and third-place honors at the National Duals.
