Women’s Soccer: Aggies Set Win Record, Prepare for Playoffs
Nov 03, 2008
Elise Dauber scored one goal and assisted on another as Delaware Valley College set a school record for wins in a season and tuned up for next week's Freedom Conference playoffs with a 2-0, non-league victory over visiting Lebanon Valley College.
The win was the fourth straight and the seventh in the last nine games for the Aggies. They upped their overall record to 13-3-1 and topped the previous 12-win campaigns by the 1997 and 1998 squads.
Delaware Valley, which was picked to finish sixth in the preseason coaches' poll, will be the number two seed thanks to a 6-2 league record. The Aggies will host defending champion Manhattanville College (10-9, 5-3) for a Freedom Conference semifinal match-up on Wednesday, November 5 (2:00 p.m.).
Top seed Eastern University (12-5, 8-0) will host the winner of Monday's four-five play-in between DeSales University (8-8-1, 5-3) and Wilkes University (9-9-1, 5-3). The championship game will take place at the highest seed remaining on Saturday, November 8 (time TBA) with the winner earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III playoffs - a feat that has never been accomplished by a Delaware Valley women's team.
After a scoreless first half, Dauber gave the Aggies all the offense they would need 12:01 into the second stanza as the senior and reigning Freedom Conference Player of the Year found a loose ball and blasted a shot past Flying Dutchmen goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer. The goal was Dauber's conference-best 18th of the year.
Dauber then upped her point total to 44 (also tops in the Freedom) as she fed a pass to Emily Perryman and the senior connected for her fifth goal of the season with 24:28 remaining.
Meanwhile, the Delaware Valley defense held Lebanon Valley (9-8-2) to just two shots in the game, both in the first half, and notched its seventh shutout of the year. Senior Cortney Bower needed to make just one save on the afternoon. Reitmeyer had nine saves in the loss for the Flying Dutchmen.
