Women’s Basketball: Aggies Pull Past Manhattanville in 78-72 Win

Delaware Valley College used an 18-5 run in the second half to pull away from visiting Manhattanville College and post a 78-72, Freedom Conference victory.

The game was the first of the 2009 portion of the schedule for both teams. The Aggies improved to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the Freedom while the Valiants dropped their first league contest after two victories and fell to 4-6 overall.

Delaware Valley never trailed in the game, but Manhattanville used a jumper by Jess Delagrange to tie it up at 55-55 with 10:26 remaining. The Aggies then began their big spurt as Brittney Zimmerman hit a pair of foul shots and Erin Boyer followed with a trey.

The Valiants got back to within two on a three-point play by Nina Johnson, but the Delaware Valley responded with nine straight and 13 of the next 15 for a 73-60 advantage with 3:30 to go. Manhattanville never got closer than six the rest of the way and that was on its last basket with 18 ticks remaining.

Delaware Valley, which held a 40-35 advantage at halftime, reached the foul line 32 times in the contest and converted 24 of their opportunities while Manhattanville was just 8-for-15 at the charity stripe. The Aggies also forced 27 turnovers on the afternoon.

Kim Vennera notched 22 points, including a 10-for-10 from the foul line, to pace Delaware Valley. The junior guard also added five rebounds, five assists and four steals in the win. Mandi Wilson tallied 16 points and eight rebounds while Boyer came off the bench to drain four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points. Zimmerman added 12 points, five rebounds and four steals.

Johnson led the Valiants with 17 points and eight rebounds. Delagrange and Olivia Nastasi also hit double digits with 12 and 10 points respectively.
