Men’s Track: Freshman Travis Pitts Wins 100-Meter Dash at MAC Championships
Jun 01, 2009
Freshman Travis Pitts finished first in the 100-meter dash to highlight Delaware Valley College’s seventh-place showing at the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championships held at Elizabethtown College.
The Aggie men registered 38 points to top Misericordia University (23.5 points), associate member Shenandoah University (9 pts) and Manhattanville College (0 points) in the 10-team field. The host Blue Jays captured the team championship as they edged Messiah College by a 170 to 168 score.
In perhaps the most exciting race of the day, Pitts became the first Delaware Valley male athlete to win a MAC track event in more than a decade. He crossed the 100-meter finish line in 11.14 seconds, just .01 ahead of Elizabethtown’s Wyatt Eaton (11.15). Pitts also earned points for the Aggies in the 200-meter dash as he was eighth with a time of 22.93 seconds, and was part of the 4X100 relay team (Shane Toohey, George, Johnson and Jon Petrilak were the others) that placed third with a time of 45.19 seconds.
Fellow rookie Tom Masterson placed in the top three in a pair of events. He took second in the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 3.75 inches and followed with a third-place effort in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 10 inches.
Petrilak, a junior, was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (59.23) and seventh in the decathlon (4,567 points). He also joined Johnson, Toohey and Kevin McCoy on the 4x400 relay team that placed eighth with a time of 3 minutes, 50.69 seconds.
