Men’s Golf: Van Hook Earns Honors, Aggies Finish 7th at Championships

Jun 01, 2009

Senior Nick van Hook capped his Delaware Valley College career by earning all-Freedom Conference honors for the third straight year as the Aggies placed seventh out of nine teams at the two-day conference championships held at the Blue Ridge Country Club (par 72).

The Aggies had a four-man team score of 679 to top Alvernia University (686) and DeSales University (689). FDU-Florham claimed its third consecutive Freedom title with a 637 followed by King’s College (655), Manhattanville College (660), Wilkes University (661), Eastern University (667) and Misericordia University (676).

Van Hook placed 10th out of 45 golfers with a two-day total of 164 and that effort was good enough for second-team all-conference accolades. Van Hook finished third and fifth the previous two championships to earn first-team honors.

Freshman Mike Kachurak was right behind van Hook and finished tied for 11th with a 165. Sophomore Jeff Smith shot a two-day total of 167 to finish tied for 15th while senior Ryan Tretter (183) and freshman Dave Mosher (187) placed 41st and 43rd respectively.

The FDU-Florham duo of David Suarez and Pat Walsh finished with the top score at the championships as they each shot a six-over-par 150. Suarez then defeated Walsh on the first playoff hole to capture the individual crown.

Individually, Mike Kane of King’s leads the pack of 45 competitors as he shot the lone under-par round of Sunday with a two-under 70. Delaware Valley senior and two-time Freedom medalist (top five finish) Nick van Hook is in contention for another medal as he is tied with three others for fifth place with an opening round 80.

Sophomore Jeff Smith shot an 83 and is tied for 11th place while senior Ryan Tretter’s 84 has him tied with four others for 15th place. Freshman Mike Kachurak and Dave Mosher each shot an 80 and are tied for 20th.
