Jan 14, 2009

Another week, another honor for Delaware Valley College senior Ralph Stambaugh (Westminster, MD/Francis Scott Key) as he has been named the 2008 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) Scholar Athlete for the sport of football.

It is the eighth postseason accolade that the 6-foot-2, 275-pound left tackle has received, including four that have involved his work in the classroom. Stambaugh's other honors have been:

  • Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) First Team All-Star
  • Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southeast All-Star
  • Second Team All-East Region
  • Honorable Mention All-American
  • MASCAC Fall All-Academic Team
  • College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine Football Academic All-District II Second Team
  • Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year

Stambaugh is the first Delaware Valley student-athlete to be selected for the MASCAC Scholar Athlete Award in the eight-year history of the award. The MASCAC Awards Committee bases selection in the 22 sports the corporation sponsors on academic record (50%) and athletic prowess (50%). The student-athlete must be a senior with a minimum grade point average of 3.2.

Stambaugh was a four-year starter and served as a team captain for the 2008 season. He did not allow a sack in ‘08 and spearheaded an offensive line that helped the Aggies lead the MAC in scoring (25.3 avg) while averaging 333.5 yards per game. He is a criminal justice major who maintains a 3.52 cumulative grade point average.

Delaware Valley finished the 2008 season with an 8-3 overall record and a share of the MAC championship. The Aggies were then selected for the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl and captured the title with a 16-7 victory over Kean University.

The MASCAC comprises of the 16 colleges and universities that make up the Middle Atlantic Conference, Freedom Conference and Commonwealth Conference.
