Five Aggies Ranked in Latest Division III Poll
Jan 31, 2008
The latest Brute-Adidas/National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III poll has Delaware Valley still holding the fourth spot, while five Aggies are ranked individually in their respective weight classes.
Delaware Valley has won nine of 13 dual meets this season with its only losses coming to the three teams ahead of them: Wartburg College of Iowa (two losses), Augsburg College of Minnesota and University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Augsburg and Wisconsin-LaCrosse flip-flopped positions in the latest rankings as Augsburg recently won a head-to-head match.
Individually, senior Dan Hall (Waretown, NJ/Southern Regional) and juniors Mike Wilcox (Buena, NJ/Buena) and Kyle Bilquist (Toms River, NJ/Tom River South) are still ranked second at 141 pounds, 184 pounds and heavyweight respectively.
Freshman Jesse Harrington (New Providence, NJ/Bound Brook) held the sixth spot in the 149-pound weight class while fellow rookie Chris Sheetz (Barto, PA/Upper Perkiomen) moved up one notch to ninth at 125 pounds.
Hall, a three-time national qualifier who missed all of last season with an injury, is 18-4 with five pins on the season. Two of his victories are against wrestlers that were ranked second (Zach McCray of Wartburg) and fifth (Travis Grawin of Luther) at the time. Hall also has a second-place showing at the York Invitational to his credit.
Wilcox, a transfer from Gloucester Community College, has won 17 of his first 19 matches (four pins) with the Aggies. At the National Duals earlier this month, he dropped a decision to top-ranked Romeo Djoumess of Wartburg, but bounced back with a win over then third-ranked Robert Gotreau of Augsburg. Wilcox has also placed first at both the York Invitational and the Sunshine Open.
Bilquist, a 2007 national qualifier, boast a 19-1 record with eight pins, and dropped his last two opponents in a combined 68 seconds. He also has wins over No. 3 Brian Borchers of Wartburg and Dan Lauren of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, who was ranked ninth at the time. Bilquist has also taken first at both the York Invitational and the Sunshine Open.
Harrington has won 20 of 25 matches (two pins) with two of his losses coming against the top wrestlers in his weight class in Jacob Naig of Wartburg and Willie Holst of Augsburg. Harrington has first-place showings at the Central Jersey Open and the York Invitational as well as a runner-up finish at the Sunshine Open to his credit.
Sheetz continues to pace Delaware Valley in wins with 24 (24-5) and is fourth in pins with seven. Among his victories is a decision over sixth-ranked Rob Struthers of Wartburg. He has also finished first at the Sunshine Open, second at the York Invitational and third at the Central Jersey Open.
Come out to our next wrestling event, when the Aggies host East Stroudsburg University on Friday, February 1 (7:00 p.m.).
