The W.W. Smith Charitable Trust awarded Delaware Valley University a $79,000 grant for student scholarships for the 2015-2016 academic year. The University awards the scholarships – ranging from $2,000 to $7,000– to full-time undergraduate students in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and demonstrated financial need. Recipients must also be permanent Pennsylvania residents from Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery or Philadelphia counties or, be from Camden, New Jersey.
“The continuous support of the Trust allowed me to pursue my education without financial worry,” said Madison Moore ’15, a past W.W. Smith scholarship recipient. “The additional scholarship from them allowed me to not take out additional loans, which put my mind and my family's minds at ease each year. I am lucky to have been able to have the scholarship, and to have the Trust looking out for students at DelVal.”
Every other year, Michelle Montgomery, a grant administrator from the Trust, visits campus to have lunch with the scholars to learn directly from them about their challenges and aspirations. The next visit will be scheduled for the 2016-2017 academic year. Students are encouraged by the Trust to use their degrees to improve their communities and the world.
“The W.W. Smith Charitable Trust helps make higher education more affordable for deserving students,” said University President Dr. Joseph Brosnan. “Scholarships are one of the most important types of gifts for institutions and they have a direct impact on the student experience. The Trust’s increase in support will allow DelVal to help prepare more students make a positive difference.”
