Delaware Valley College has been recognized on “30 Great Small Colleges for a Counseling Degree,” a list published in March 2015 by Best Psychology Degrees, an online guide to top psychology degree programs.

“DelVal’s counseling psychology programs are preparing students who have a passion for helping others to move into rewarding careers,” said DelVal President Dr. Joseph Brosnan. “We have invested in facilities and highly-qualified, caring faculty who mentor and provide research opportunities for our students.”

For this ranking, Best Psychology Degrees examined selective small colleges and universities with an undergraduate population of 3,000 students or less that offer a bachelor’s degree in counseling or a specialized counseling area. Only schools with a current accreditation were reviewed. The website chose the schools based on percentage of students admitted. Schools are ranked by the number of degrees conferred in counseling psychology for the 2012-2013 academic year.

“DelVal provides small classes where students can really get to know faculty on a one-on-one basis,” said Dr. Allison Buskirk-Cohen, DelVal associate professor of counseling psychology. “We combine classroom instruction with an emphasis on real-world experience and I think because of this combination, our graduates are more prepared to enter the field. That personal student-focused experience is a hallmark of a DelVal education and it’s something we intend to keep as we transition to university status.”

Through The Experience360 Program, 100 percent of students gain real-world experience before they graduate from DelVal. The counseling psychology program offers advanced training in counseling, including electives in substance abuse, developmental disabilities and behavior modification. Faculty members serve as mentors to students to help guide their educational and professional development.

DelVal has a counseling psychology lab on campus, which allows students to practice their skills in mock sessions while receiving feedback from faculty in real time. DelVal also offers a graduate program in counseling psychology, which is taught by the same faculty members and provides opportunities for bachelor’s degree students to interact with graduate level students.
