Feb 07, 2008

Delaware Valley College won eight of 10 weight classes, including a pair of pins and technical falls, as the fourth-ranked Aggies earned a 34-9 victory over visiting Centenary College on Senior Night.

DelVal, which honored seniors Dan Hall and Ryan Herwig as well as former head coach and Hall of Famer Robert Marshall before the match, improved to 12-4 in dual meets. The Cyclones fell to 6-6.

Chris Sheetz, ranked ninth in Division III at 125 pounds, opened the match in grand style by pinning Dustin Overs (8-11) to improve to a team-best 27-5 on the season. He built a 7-1 lead after one period, then used a reversal to put Overs on his back just seven seconds into the second stanza (3:07) for a 6-0 Delaware Valley lead.

Brandon Clemmer (20-7) upped the advantage to 9-0 as he used a pair of near-falls in the first period to go up 6-0 over Jay Giurichich (16-10). Giurichich pulled to with three at 8-5, but Clemmer escaped for one point and had riding time for another for a 10-5 decision.

Hall wrestled for the final time at home, and the second-ranked wrestler in Division III at 141 pounds built a 4-2, first period lead en route to a 5-3 decision over Jon Stillo (26-9). The win was the 19th in 25 tries this season for Hall and the 71st victory in the three-time national qualifier's collegiate career.

Sixth-ranked Jesse Harrington (23-5) hit the mat at 149; riding time was the difference in a 4-3 decision over David Alsieux (15-15). Harrington registered a takedown with 20 seconds left for a 3-2 lead, but Alsieux escaped with just two ticks left. Harrington, however, had more than a minute of riding time for the extra point and the win.

Herwig was dominant in his final home match as he notched an 18-2 technical fall victory over Charles Cannella (7-12) at 157 pounds to give Delaware Valley a 20-0 lead. He used a pair of three-point, near falls to build a 10-1 lead in the first period and ended the match with another near fall with 47 seconds left in the second period (4:13). For Herwig, a two-time national qualifier, it his 17th win of the year (17-9), the 72nd in his three years with the Aggies and the 102nd of his collegiate career.

Centenary picked up its first points of the evening at 165 pounds as Jared Duffy (15-9) pinned Greg Miele (14-10) in 4:10. Miele held a 5-0 lead before Duffy earned a takedown and the pin in a seven-second span. The Cyclones then made it 20-9 as Derek Schisler (19-2) notched a 7-5 decision over Mike DiGregorio (11-12) at 174 pounds.

The Aggies, however, won the final three matches, including a pin and a technical fall. Mike Wilcox sealed the victory as the second-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds picked up a 22-7, technical fall win over Ben Ostner (18-15). Wilcox used a combination of nine takedowns and reversals to run his record to 20-2 and give Delaware Valley a 25-9 lead.

The advantage went up to 28-9 as Joe West turned a 3-2 deficit into a 12-5 decision over Kaleb Wisner (3-8) at 197 pounds. The win was the 19th for West in 28 matches this season.
