02/13/09: DelVal Athletic Department to Host Fundraiser for The V Foundation

Feb 09, 2009

The Delaware Valley College Athletic department will hold a fundraiser for The V Foundation during DelVal's home wrestling match with Millersville University on Friday, February 13 (7:00 p.m.) as well as the home basketball doubleheader with King's College on the following day. Women's tip-off is at 1:00 p.m.; Men's tip-off is at 3:00 p.m.

Known as the "3rd Annual DelVal/Jimmy V Weekend," all proceeds from admission into the games, the concession stand and other donations will go towards the effort. It is part of the Delaware Valley College Athletic department and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's (SAAC) efforts to promote positive student-athlete experiences through a number of activities. Last year's event raised more than $1,000 for the foundation.

The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, legendary North Carolina State basketball coach and ESPN commentator. It is a charitable organization that is dedicated to saving lives by helping to find a cure for cancer. Since 1993, The V Foundation has raised more than $80 million and awarded cancer research grants in 37 states and the District of Columbia. As of October 1, 2006, 100% of all direct cash donations and net proceeds of events contributed to The V Foundation will be used to fund cancer research and related programs.

"This has now become an annual event on our calendar, and we are very happy to take part in the fight against cancer with The V Foundation," Delaware Valley College athletic director Frank Wolfgang said.

The wrestling match with Millersville is the final one at home this season for the third-ranked Aggies, and their seniors will be honored beforehand. Meanwhile, the basketball games with King's are crucial Freedom Conference contests for Delaware Valley as both squads are in contention for postseason berths.

Fans who cannot attend either game can also make a donation towards the fundraiser by sending a check (payable to "The V Foundation") to the following address:

Delaware Valley College
700 East Butler Avenue
