Why
Music?
Why should I perform in the band or the chorale if I’m
not going to pursue a career as a professional musician? The
benefits of participating in a college musical ensemble are
numerous. Many DelVal students count their performances with
the band and the chorale among their fondest college memories.
They treasure the close friendships developed while working
side by side with fellow students. More importantly, they
know the discipline, concentration, poise and determination
that goes into crafting an excellent musical performance will
help them achieve success in their future academic and professional
endeavors. No wonder studies continue to show a strong correlation
between musical performance and academic achievement.
Music Scholarships
To help encourage and support the musical endeavors of our
students, Delaware Valley College annually awards music scholarships
to incoming freshman who make a commitment to perform in either
the Concert Band or the Chorale. These scholarships are awarded
to talented DVC students with a strong secondary interest
in music. Criteria for awarding music scholarships include
an on-campus audition, recommendation of high school chorale
or band director, and the student’s overall academic
record to date. These scholarships are only for non-music
majors so you don’t need to worry about competing with
the child prodigy aiming to become the next Mozart. We are
looking for good students who love music.
Ensembles at Delaware Valley College
The Delaware Valley College Concert Band and Chorale have
been an important part of campus life for nearly 100 years.
Both ensembles perform on campus throughout the year including
annual family weekend, holiday and spring concerts as well
as special performances off campus. The ensemble members,
many of whom participated in county, district, regional or
state high school festivals, are drawn from practically every
major on campus. The ensembles’ repertory ranges from
Bach and Beethoven to Duke Ellington and George Gershwin.
Among the highlights of the past few years was the Chorale’s
joint performance of Bach’s Leipzig Audition Cantatas
with the College Misericordia Choral Society, which was broadcast
on regional National Public Radio stations. Although best
known for its programs in science, business, communications
and agriculture, Delaware Valley College continues to build
its reputation in the performing arts.
