In
1829, the annual Philadelphia Flower Show first began as an exhibition
of the plant collections of members of the Pennsylvania Horticultural
Society. Since then, it has continued with only one break (during
the 1960s for construction of the Civic Center), and holds the Guinness
Book of World Records award for both the longest-running horticultural
show and the largest indoor flower show.”
Delaware Valley College first entered the Flower Show in 1950, when
the college was still the National Agricultural College. Professor
of Ornamental Horticulture, Dr. Frederic Blau, was the faculty member
responsible for organizing this first display. Since 1950, the college
has remained a participant and has won recognition for its many
awards.
Over
the years, the college's exhibits have reflected contemporary themes,
such as orchids in the 1960s, organic gardening in the 1970s, and
sustainability in the early 21st century. The college has also partnered
with colleges from other countries, such as Great Britain (1985)
and Japan (1997) to create unique displays.
