Happy summer from Delaware Valley College!
I've really enjoyed talking with DelVal alumni during my first three months in this role. You have taught me about A-Day, Halloween Haunting, and freshman vs. sophomore tug-of-war (over what was a large mud pit and is now Lake Archer). I've heard about the Great Samuel Hall Flood, learned the risks of walking "Gingko Lane" in the early 60's without wearing the freshman beanie, and gained insights about campus legends like Rod Gilbert, Jim Diamond, Richard Ziemer, and Howard Eyre.
I have also heard a number of great ideas for programs and services that would benefit our alumni. Read on to learn about terrific volunteer activities, events, and networking opportunities just for you! By the way, if you would prefer these emails go to a different email address, please let me know! Thank you for sharing your memories, ideas, and warm wishes for success—and keep those great ideas coming.

Middle income families face financial aid gap
As president of the college, Dr. Joe Brosnan sees firsthand the financial challenges students face when trying to pay for a good college education. Even though DelVal provides $21.8 million in direct student aid, it's simply not enough to bridge the gap for some families. He recently shared an opinion piece with the Courier Times, highlighting the particular challenges that face middle income families.
You can help DelVal families facing the financial aid gap with a gift to the DelVal Fund. This fund helps to support financial aid for students as well as academic and student life programs. http://www.delval.edu/giving
Life Sciences Building: Signs of Progress
The Life Sciences building is really going up quickly. In addition to classrooms and labs, the building will feature a great auditorium which will allow us to welcome alumni, students, and community members to enjoy campus-wide events. To follow the construction progress, check out the webcam! www.delval.edu/offices-services/other-departments-divisions/event-planning-facilities/facilities/life-sciences-building
Volunteer to help DelVal
There are many ways you can help DelVal as a volunteer. Here are a few of the most critical areas:
Add beauty to campus at a garden restoration workday. The next workday is July 13; register online at http://www.delval.edu/alumni-giving/upcoming-events.
Join our Alumni Recruitment Connection, and share your enthusiasm with prospective applicants to DelVal! For information, contact Lynn or complete the online form.
Help out in the Charitable Garden, a community partnership which will supply 20,000 pounds of produce to hungry families this year. Email Lynn at email@example.com for details!
Connect with a student or young alumnus in your field on the professional networking site, LinkedIn! Learn how at http://www.linkedin.com/in/lynncarroll.
Help DelVal while adding leadership credentials to your resume by running for a seat on the Alumni Executive Committee, also known as the "AEC"! Contact Lynn Carroll at firstname.lastname@example.org to learn more about the great work accomplished by these dedicated alumni. Let me know if you'd like to run for a seat yourself or nominate another alumnus. Look for the ballot via email in early fall.
Where is my copy of Horizons?
The most recent issue of Horizons magazine arrived in mailboxes in April and highlighted students and alumni who are improving their communities. If you did not receive a copy, we may have an outdated mailing address for you. Please email me with your correct address, or complete the online form. Thanks!
Resource for DelVal job seekers, employers
DelVal alumni are a terrific resource for students seeking internships. At the same time, DelVal graduates are a fantastic skilled labor pool for businesses looking to hire hardworking employees. How can we link alumni up more effectively with DelVal's home-grown talent? We've got the answer: ExperienceLink. This web site is a clearinghouse for DelVal job seekers and businesses hoping to hire a DelVal student or graduate. Check it out – if you're in the job market, choose Student/Alumni, and if you're hoping to post an opening, choose Employer. If you find the perfect match, please let us know! https://delval-csm.symplicity.com/?/experiencelink
Thank you... field trip hosts and guest speakers!
Classroom learning can't substitute for seeing a concept in action or hearing about a technique from someone who knows it firsthand. Our deep gratitude goes out to the many alumni who give our students a "real world" experience, whether by inviting students to visit their work site or by speaking to a class on campus.
- Matt Hostrander '02 spoke to the students of Prof. Larry Hepner '74 about soil science.
