Selecting great wines for under $15

In order to drink a very good bottle of wine, you expect to spend a lot of money, right? Wrong! In fact, most wine enthusiasts admit to receiving more pleasure from a great-valued wine versus a wine they know is good costing more than $30 or more. Why? Because find¬ing a great tasting wine that is easier on the wallet or pocketbook is truly the sign of an intelligent wine enthusiast. This course will introduce class participants to six wines from The Wine Spectator Magazine’s 100 Top Value Wines for 2013.

Exploring the Wines of the Southern Hemisphere

Argentina and Chile: After Europe, South America is the world’s most important wine-producing continent. European vines were grown here, as early as 1531 in Peru. Argentina and Chile, just like its culture, continue to be heavily influenced by immigrants and their descendants – initially Spanish and Portuguese, more recently Italians, French, and Germans. This class will focus on the main regions and wines of Argentina and Chile that will leave you wanting more.

Australia and New Zealand: Australia has emerged as one of the most respected continents in wine producing worldwide. Science and technology have taken a front-seat in helping to cultivate quality grapes, and the world is taking note. Australia’s proud grape is Shiraz, but Australia produces some extraordinary white wines as well. New Zealand is a relative newcomer onto the wine scene, but this young and emerging country has the world head-over-heels with their production of Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Class participants will taste and understand wines from both countries.
