The Office of First Year Experience is dedicated to providing incoming students and their families with all of the necessary resources to ensure a smooth transition into our Delaware Valley College community. We need Orientation Leaders/Peer Mentors to help make this transition happen!
Orientation Leaders/Peer Mentors (OLPMs) are role models as well as sources of support and information for new freshman and transfer students. They play a major role in facilitating the adjustment of new students and their families to the DVC community. They share accurate information about academic, personal, and social resources while working collaboratively with faculty, professional staff, and student staff from other areas on campus.

What does an Orientation Leader do?

Support the Goals of New Student Orientation:
- by introducing entering undergraduate students to the opportunities and responsibilities of academic life at the College
- by integrating entering students into life at the College by connecting them to other students, faculty and administrators
- by introducing new students to the obligations and ethical standards of living in the community
- by helping students maintain their personal health and wellness
- by introducing educational programs and opportunities – academic, social and religious
- by familiarizing the families of new students with the College experience
- by introducing new students to Delaware Valley College's traditions, standards, and policies
- Ease the transition to college life, giving attention to the special needs of any group or category of students
- Serve as an informative and professional representative of the staff and of Delaware Valley College at all times
- Leaders are expected to be an active voice for students and provide overall support to make each program a success in accordance with our goals and mission
- Facilitate group presentation and discussions on subjects such as academics and campus issues
- Assist with supervision of scheduled Orientation events
- Serve as a new student mentor within the FYE setting
- Assist with recruitment and the staff selection process
- Upon request, work with Skills for College Success Instructors and assist with the implementation of course material pertaining to the transition of undergraduate students into the DVC community
Orientation Leader Requirements and Characteristics
- Full-time Delaware Valley College student
- Good academic standing with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.2
- Campus or community involvement (extra-curricular activities etc.)
- Remain in good judicial standing
- Exhibited leadership potential and experience
- Enthusiasm for Delaware Valley College and the Orientation program
- Possess the desire to work in a team environment
- Open-minded towards cultures, ethnicities, lifestyles and backgrounds
- Possess strong communication, public speaking and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to serve as a role model and leader, including on-campus, on-line and in the community
- Commitment to assisting new students and their families
- Good sense of humor
- Positive Attitude
- Strong motivator
Terms of Employment
- Ability to attend all training dates
- Must abide by all College Student Conduct Codes, at all times
- Full preparation, prompts attendance, and complete participation for all transfer and freshman orientation sessions
- Positive and effective responses to reasonable program needs, including setting up and cleaning up of program area

Orientation Leader Responsibilities
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL DATES ARE MANDATORY – if you cannot attend all dates you will not be selected as an Orientation Leader

Must be available during all of the following dates:
- OL Meeting/Icebreakers: April 14, 2012
- Training: May 14 - 18, 2012
- June Orientations and Preparations: June 1,4,6,7,8,9,11,12, 2012
- August Training and Preparations: August 12-17, 2012
- Week of Welcome: August 21 - 26, 2012
- Family Day/Homecoming Preparations: September 26, 2012
- Family Day/Homecoming: September 27,28,29, 2012
- January 2012 Orientation: January 19, 2012
- Dates are subject to change
- Must be available for all FYE programs in fall 2012 semester
- Assist the FYE facilitator with session presentation for a minimum of 9 hours for the fall 2012 semester
- Serve as a positive role model
- Be attentive to the needs of your students
- Be familiar with campus resources and services
- Interact with various levels of the DVC community
- Attend regularly scheduled OLPM meetings
- Conduct yourself in an ethical and professional manner
- Maintain confidentiality
- Follow all risk management procedures and seek approval for any off-campus activities
- Make contact with the students (mentee) at least once a week (electronically or personally)
- Keep journals/logs tracking self and student interaction and attendance
- Meet with the Associate Dean bi-weekly
- Attend monthly training sessions
- Schedule one activity with your designated group
- Other duties as assigned
Overall Staff Selection Process/Timeline
After a review of the applications, selected candidates will be chosen to continue through the selection process. All notifications will be sent to the student’s DVC email address. The remaining process includes:
- Applications Due: Wednesday, February 8th, 2012 by 4:00 pm
- Mandatory Group interview/activity – Saturday, February 11th, 2012; Time: 9AM-12PM, Location: Student Center – Coffeehouse
- Individual interviews – February 13-24, 2012
- Selection Announcement: March 5, 2012
- Acceptance Deadline: March 16, 2012 by 4pm
- Final selections will be made based upon the application materials, individual interview, and group interview.
Time commitment
- OLs may not have other time commitments during assigned May, June and August orientation training or program sessions, but may be excused during free time depending on the program needs and Associate Dean’s permission
- OLs are required to assist with required duties of the FYE Office to include having a selected group of new students that they will work with in the fall 2012 semester to intrusively assist in their acclimation to DVC; refer to appropriate resources; and other duties as assigned by the FYE office
- Assistance will be required for recruitment and training of new staff during the academic year
Discipline and/or Termination
The Office of First Year Experience may dock pay, place a staff member on probation, or terminate employment under the following circumstances:
- Failure of a staff member to carry out responsibilities and/or terms and conditions of his/her employment
- On-campus or off-campus conduct deemed inappropriate for a campus staff member, which includes violations of Residence Life or the Campus Judicial Policies and Regulations Document, and/or other Delaware Valley Policies
