Notable Delaware Valley Alumni

When looking at a prospective university or college, one of the main focal points of your research is learning about what great minds are products of the institution. And while it’s nice to ponder potential graduation speakers, successful alumni are a strong indication that you’re looking at a school that provides ample opportunities for you to succeed and follow your passions.
A native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Laura Owen graduated from DelVal with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. She became the first woman executive at the St. Regis Paper Company where she worked as a financial advisor before being appointed as the Kansas Secretary of Commerce in 1991.
Owen would eventually found ICOP Digital Inc., which engineered and marketed different mobile digital surveillance products. Her innovative and revolutionary products were not only successful but also immensely helpful for many individuals. In fact, ICOP would receive the Patriot Award from the US Department of Defense in 2008.
Owen is currently the founder and CEO of Ponscio, a social network that helps to increase the potential of success for female entrepreneurs through education, mentoring, and access to capital. Owen was named to the DelVal Board of Trustees in 2012.
Dr. Chuck Wira
Now a professor of physiology at Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Chuck Wira, class of 1962, received his undergraduate degree in animal husbandry from DelVal. Wira currently works with graduate students from all over the world in his research of how hormones influence immunity. He has published approximately 175 research papers regarding reproductive immunology and is the current President of the International Society for Immunology of Reproduction.
A member of the class of 2011, Melissa Milligan graduated from DelVal as a pre-professional biology major and as the MVP of DelVal’s equestrian team. Not only did she receive the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Academic Athlete Award, but Milligan also landed a spot in the University of Pennsylvania veterinary school.
She currently works alongside Dr. Jeremiah Poghon and a team of veterinarians and wildlife managers at the Tsavo Easr National Park in Kenya. She assists with a wide variety of projects that keep the African wildlife in the park healthy. Whether she’s taking care of an elephant’s bullet wound or providing treatment to an impala with mange, Milligan is chasing her dreams of becoming a vet.
