It was a little more than a year ago when I accepted President Brosnan’s invitation to join the DelVal community as vice president for student affairs. And I am so glad that I did! This past year has gone by quickly and in retrospect is a bit blurry, as I had a lot to learn, a lot of people to meet, and much to observe and ponder.

One thing that’s not blurry about the past year is my impression of the student body here at DelVal. I have great clarity about making the statement that the students at DelVal are among the most interesting and engaging that I have met over the course of my career in higher education.

While I’ve only experienced two of them so far, I’ve been vocal to colleagues that one of my favorite campus events is the Club and Organization Expo that happens each semester. I really enjoy the displays that the different groups put up and am always impressed by the really interesting things that our students are up to and get excited about.

If I had to try to put my finger on it, I would say that for many students at DelVal, work and play are almost the same thing. Clubs, organizations, teams and other activities really seem to give students a social outlet with a purpose around learning. So many students I have met are passionate about their interests, and their in-class and out-of-class experiences seem to very often support each other. That’s special, and I think it’s what makes DelVal unique, and our graduates successful.

To all the students who have popped their heads into my office in the hallway of the Student Center to tell me about something really “cool” you did in class, or on a field trip, or with your organization, please keep it up. It makes my day and reminds me that this is a very special place.
