Helping students prepare for the Spring Job and Internship Fair
Posted on March 25, 2015 by Maggie Villari '13 (B.A.), '15 (M.A.).
On Wednesday, March 18 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. a group of students excited about their career development gathered in the Life Sciences Building to prepare for the Job and Internship Fair.
At the Job and Internship Fair Prep Workshop, Deanna Parkton and Stacy Swearengen showed students how to get the most out of the event. They talked with students about how to navigate the room, the five fatal flaws applicants make at job fairs and the ins and outs of networking. The skills presented will not only benefit the students at the fair, but build a solid foundation for a student’s future!
When meeting potential employers, especially in settings like a job fair, things can get uncomfortable. At the Job and Internship Fair Prep Workshop, these issues were addressed and students gained the confidence they needed to feel comfortable while speaking with employers. One of the most important things students forget to do after these events is send thank you notes. To prevent this, students were given thank you cards of their own to follow up with, and given the opportunity to make the best impression on the companies at the fair.
Overall, the Job and Internship Fair Prep Workshop was a success that received great feedback from the students. One student said that everything at the Prep Workshop was perfect and that the only negative was that more students didn’t take advantage of it. If you feel nervous about speaking with potential employers, or, if the words “job search” make you cringe in fear, the Job and Internship Fair Prep Workshop can help you! Look for the opportunity again before next semester’s Job and Internship Fair.
Don’t forget! Today is the Spring Job and Internship Fair! It is from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Work Gym! We look forward to seeing you there!
