Easy Ways to Relieve College Stress

Exercise

About 30 minutes of exercise daily is recommended by doctors to stay healthy, but exercise has more benefits than that. It also can melt away your stress by releasing endorphins and making you feel happier. A few half hour sessions over the course of the week can leave you feeling less stressed out than before.

If you're stressed out right now and thinking that the last thing you feel like doing is getting up and being active, try to do an exercise that you actually enjoy. Consider physical activity such as swimming, hiking, biking, yoga or even just going for a walk. Doing an exercise that you like can instantly increase your mood and it can also become a staple in your daily routine. 

Sleep

With a packed schedule, it may be tempting at times to sacrifice sleep to spend time with friends or study a little longer. But in doing so, you may actually be increasing your stress levels. Insufficient sleep can drastically affect the way you handle stressors throughout the day, while also increasing your risk for illnesses. 

Adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep every night for good health, and it's important to align your sleep schedule with normal sleeping hours. You should be rising and sleeping close to when the sun is rising and setting for best results.

Diet

A college diet may not always include the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables per day, but a healthy diet is crucial in order to reduce stress levels. A diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables will give you the fuel you need to power through classes and studying as opposed to sugar and junk foods that can leave you feeling tired and sluggish.

Be sure to stock your fridge with grab and go fruits and veggies to snack on all day long during class. If you have a meal plan, choose healthier options in the dining hall rather than fried foods. 

Avoid Overloading

One way to avoid too much stress in the first place is to only take on what you can handle. Juggling a job, full schedule, homework and sports can end up in disaster. If you're feeling overwhelmed on a day-to-day basis, it may be necessary to reevaluate your priorities and scale down on some of your activities.
