BKO Hunger Enters the Ring for a Third Round

On June 20, 2014, as the sun was rising over sleepy Doylestown, volunteers were beginning to fill the Moumgis Auditorium at Delaware Valley University for a unique experience that only happens once a year.

By the time the sun was fully risen, the auditorium was filled with hundreds of people, clustered around tables in assembly lines to prepare thousands of meals for local food pantries. These volunteers were all a part of Bucks Knocks Out Hunger, a hunger-fighting initiative to raise awareness of food insecurity in Bucks County, culminating in a meal packing event each summer. At the end of the day, they had packed over 100,000 shelf stable meals for Bucks County pantries.

This year, Bucks Knocks Out Hunger will be held on July 24, once again in Moumgis Auditorium (located in the Student Center). This project is a joint effort between United Way of Bucks County, Bucks County Opportunity Council, Delaware Valley University, and Rolling Harvest Food Rescue. Through these partnerships, we strive to provide:

  • Over 100,000 nutritious, shelf-stable meals to local pantries
  • Tens of thousands of pounds of fresh, locally grown produce to pantries
  • The ability for pantries to access lean proteins and other perishable items that are not usually donated through food drives

To achieve these goals, we need to raise $63,250 – a 15 Percent increase from last year. This will allow us to ensure that Bucks County residents have access to healthy food, improving the health and wellbeing of our community as a whole.
