A Walk in the Park

Hi! My name is Tom Rossman and this fall I’m studying at Griffith University on the Gold Coast of Australia. I’ll be here for one semester, and during that time, I plan to learn more about myself by accepting change, interacting with people from all over the world and trying new things. This past weekend, I had the pleasure of exploring Tamborine National Park. The day began with a tour of a glow worm cave. However, the cave isn’t a real cave and is used only to rehabilitate the dying glow worm population of Australia.
Either way, walking into the pitch black “cave” was one of the most extraordinary sights of my life. It was as if I was looking at the beautiful night sky, each star being a tiny fly larva. If I were an insect, I too would have been lunch, for I would’ve flown straight into the light.
After the cave, I took a hike on the Curtis Falls trail. The section of the park was known as Joalah, which means “haunt of the lyrebird.” While I didn’t see any lyrebirds, I did come across the waterfall that the common name goes by. Walking up it was like something out of a movie. The water around was as clear as glass, and it beamed with life.
Continuing our journey, we came across some locals: Water dragons, land mullets, flying foxes, and a forest mouse were all out enjoying the day too. Well, maybe not the mouse. The mouse had run out from under a stump into the middle of the trail right in front of me.
I bent down to try to take some pictures when I noticed something was wrong. He had no fear of me, and every few steps he took toward me, he would stumble. After a few seconds of watching him, he was no longer able to move his back legs. It is my guess that the poor mouse was bitten by a snake, but I left before I could find out.
After the hike, the last stop was a brewery. There I tried a selection of handcrafted beers and a platter of the best cheese. The beer was very good, but my attention was more focused on the cheese. I was enlightened to a savory, creamy brie; a sharp, red cheddar; some bleu cheese that was aged to perfection; and a tangy white cheddar.
The trip was rather fun, and my adventure is coming to a close. But I still have a few more exciting adventures left before I leave.
