No. 4 Delaware Valley College 34, Centenary
College 9
DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Delaware Valley College won eight of 10 weight
classes including a pair of pins and technical falls as the fourth-ranked
Aggies earned a 34-9 victory over visiting Centenary College on
Senior Night.
Delaware Valley, which honored seniors Dan Hall and Ryan Herwig
as well as former head coach and Hall of Famer Robert Marshall before
the match, improved to 12-4 in dual meets. The Cyclones fell to
6-6.
Chris Sheetz, ranked ninth in Division III at 125 pounds, opened
the match in grand style by pinning Dustin Overs (8-11) to improve
to a team-best 27-5 on the season. He built a 7-1 lead after one
period then used a reversal to put Overs on his back just seven
seconds into the second stanza (3:07) for a 6-0 Delaware Valley
lead.
Brandon Clemmer (20-7) upped the advantage to 9-0 as he used a
pair of near-falls in the first period to go up 6-0 over Jay Giurichich
(16-10). Giurichich pulled to with three at 8-5, but Clemmer escaped
for one point and had riding time for another for a 10-5 decision.
Hall wrestled for the final time at home and the second-ranked
wrestler in Division III at 141 pounds built a 4-2, first period
lead en route to a 5-3 decision over Jon Stillo (26-9). The win
was the 19th in 25 tries this season for Hall and the 71st victory
in the three-time national qualifier's collegiate career.
Sixth-ranked Jesse Harrington (23-5) hit the mat 149 and riding
time was the difference in a 4-3 decision over David Alsieux (15-15).
Harrington registered a takedown with 20 seconds left for a 3-2
lead, but Alsieux escaped with just two ticks left. However, Harrington
had move than a minute of riding time for the extra point and the
win.
Herwig was dominant in his final home match as he notched an 18-2
technical fall victory over Charles Cannella (7-12) at 157 pounds
to give Delaware Valley a 20-0 lead. He used a pair of three-point,
near falls to build a 10-1 lead in the first period and ended the
match with another near fall with 47 seconds left in the second
period (4:13). For Herwig, a two-time national qualifier, it his
17th win of the year (17-9), the 72nd in his three years with the
Aggies and the 102nd of his collegiate career.
Centenary picked up its first points of the evening at 165 pounds
as Jared Duffy (15-9) pinned Greg Miele (14-10) in 4:10. Miele held
a 5-0 lead before Duffy earned a takedown and the pin in a seven-second
span. The Cyclones then made it 20-9 as Derek Schisler (19-2) notched
a 7-5 decision over Mike DiGregorio (11-12) at 174 pounds.
However, the Aggies won the final three matches, including a pin
and a technical fall. Mike Wilcox sealed the victory as the second-ranked
wrestler at 184 pounds picked up a 22-7, technical fall win over
Ben Ostner (18-15). Wilcox used a combination of nine takedowns
and reversals to run his record to 20-2 and give Delaware Valley
a 25-9 lead.
The advantage went up to 28-9 as Joe West turned a 3-2 deficit
into a 12-5 decision over Kaleb Wisner (3-8) at 197 pounds. The
win was the 19th for West in 28 matches this season.
Kyle Bilquist ended the match the way it began as the second-ranked
heavyweight needed just 59 seconds to drop Sandile Manzini (2-10).
Bilquist is now 22-1 with 10 pins on the season and he pinned all
four of his opponents at home matches in a combined three minutes
and 35 seconds.
