Aggies Compete At Central Jersey Open

EWING (NJ) - Ryan Herwig's first-place finish highlighted the Delaware Valley College wrestling team's participation at the season-opening Central Jersey Open hosted by The College of New Jersey.

No team scoring was held at the event, which featured 12 teams ranging from Division I to junior colleges and split wrestlers into two brackets - one for freshmen and sophomores and the other for junior and seniors.

Herwig, a junior and returning Division III national qualifier, took top honors in the 157-pound bracket. He opened with an 8-6 victory over Dan DiColo of The College of New Jersey, and followed with an 8-5 decision over C.J. Inglin of Boston University in the finals.

Senior transfer Ricky LaForge, who is ranked sixth in Divison III at 141 pounds, wrestled up a weight class and placed second at 149. His only loss was a 3-1, overtime setback to Glen Shober of Navy's junior varsity team.

Senior Ryan Pope finished third at 165 pounds and fellow classmate Mike Handleman was fifth at 133 pounds.

In the freshman/sophomore brackets, Delaware Valley had six runner-ups in Brandon Earlston (141), Billy Woodward (149), Mike DiGregorio (157), Paul Donnell (174), Martin Porter (184) and Kevin Orr (197).
