Compete At Central Jersey Open
EWING (NJ) - Ryan Herwig's first-place finish
highlighted the Delaware Valley College wrestling team's participation
at the season-opening Central Jersey Open hosted by The College
of New Jersey.
No team scoring was held at the event, which
featured 12 teams ranging from Division I to junior colleges and
split wrestlers into two brackets - one for freshmen and sophomores
and the other for junior and seniors.
Herwig, a junior and returning Division III
national qualifier, took top honors in the 157-pound bracket. He
opened with an 8-6 victory over Dan DiColo of The College of New
Jersey, and followed with an 8-5 decision over C.J. Inglin of Boston
University in the finals.
Senior transfer Ricky LaForge, who is ranked
sixth in Divison III at 141 pounds, wrestled up a weight class and
placed second at 149. His only loss was a 3-1, overtime setback
to Glen Shober of Navy's junior varsity team.
Senior Ryan Pope finished third at 165 pounds
and fellow classmate Mike Handleman was fifth at 133 pounds.
In the freshman/sophomore brackets, Delaware
Valley had six runner-ups in Brandon Earlston (141), Billy Woodward
(149), Mike DiGregorio (157), Paul Donnell (174), Martin Porter
(184) and Kevin Orr (197). Returning national qualifier Jaryd Steinbacher
(149), Vinny LaSelva (165) and Kyle Bilquist (Hwt) each finished
third.
