Delaware Valley Places Second At York College Invitational

YORK (PA) - Delaware Valley College 149-pounder Ryan Herwig was the lone individual champion as the Aggies placed second out of six teams at the York College Spartan Invitational.

The Aggies racked up 68.5 points to trail only York, which had 89.5 points. Montclair State University (50.5), Gloucester County College (48.5), Washington & Jefferson College (11) and the University of Maryland Baltimore County (11) rounded out the field.

Herwig, a junior college transfer, won the title by pinning Pete Elers of Washington & Jefferson with just 41 seconds remaining in the first period (2:19).

Four other Aggies reached the finals and were runners-up: Zach Holt (125), John Powell (165), Paul Donnell (174) and Mike Berlanda (184). Holt dropped a 5-3 decision to Derrick Sharp of Gloucester in the finals while Powell had a 5-2 setback to Jerry Bowne of York. Donnell dropped a 13-11 decision to Mark Pieffer of York while Duane Bastress of York posted a 17-1, technical-fall victory over Berlanda in the finals.

Justin Shorts (133), Martin Porter (197) and Kevin Orr (Hwt) finished in third place while Brian Forsythe (133), Dan Hall (141), Greg Miele (157) and Charlie Pendlebury (Hwt) took fourth for Delaware Valley.
