State-Mankato 37, Delaware Valley 6 Delaware Valley 39, Newberry 3 Delaware
Valley 24, Shippensburg 21 SHIPPENSBURG (PA) - Returning national
runner-up Jamall Johnson pinned all three of his opponents on Saturday as the
Delaware Valley College wrestling team won two of three matches against Division
II opponents at the East Coast Duals hosted by Shippensburg University.
The
Aggies, ranked 28th in Division III, dropped a 37-6 decision to Minnesota State-Mankato
but followed with a 39-3 triumph over Newberry and a 24-21 victory over Shippensburg.
They are now 6-6 in dual meets.
Johnson, ranked second in Division III
at 197 pounds, picked up the lone points against Minnesota State-Mankato as he
pinned Ben Janike in just 85 seconds. He needed just 17 seconds to drop Dabe Bush
of Newberry and then pinned Corey Jacoby of Shippensburg in 5:54 to improve to
14-4 on the season.
The Newberry match saw Delaware Valley win nine of
10 weight classes. Jaryd Steinbacher opened with a pin of Matt Black in 3:33 of
their 149-pound match. Ryan Herwig and John Powell followed with decisions at
157 and 165 pounds respectively, while Ryan Pope (174) and Mike Berlanda (184)
each won by a 5-2 decision for an 18-0 Aggie lead.
Johnson followed with
his pin to make it 24-0. Newberry won its lone match at heavyweight and Josh Proctor
(125) and Justin Shorts (133) won by forfeits. Dan Hall ended the match with a
9-4 decision over Taylor Gilstrap at 141 for the 39-3 final.
The Shippensburg
match saw Delaware Valley fall behind 3-0 before Herwig pinned Chris Murray in
2:26 for a 6-3 lead. Powell and Pope followed with decisions to make it 12-3,
but Shippensburg answered with a pin at 184 and a 12-9 score.
Johnson's
third pin of the day gave the Aggies a nine-point advantage, but Shippensburg
tied it at 18-18 with a pin at heavyweight and a decision at 125. However, they
forfeited 133 pounds for six points and a 24-18 Delaware Valley lead. Alex Renn
needed to Hall to tie the match, but he managed just a 13-7 decision and the Aggies
had the win.
