Aggies Upset 12th Ranked Team In Division II

SHIPPENSBURG (PA) -- The Delaware Valley College wrestling team, ranked fourth in Division III, won six of 10 weight classes to pull off a 23-12 upset of a Shippensburg University team that is ranked 12th in Division II.

The match took place at the East Coast Duals and the Aggies (3-2) will face three more Division II teams on Saturday, including No. 5 Mercyhurst College and No. 18 West Liberty State College.

The night began with a major upset in Delaware Valley's favor as senior 125-pounder Mike Weston notched an 11-7 decision over the third-ranked wrestler in Division II, Jamie Thomas. Two-time returning All-American Barry Wise, ranked second in Division III, followed with an 11-second pin of Tyler Gilson at 133 pounds for a 9-0 Aggie lead.

Returning national qualifier Dan Hall made it 13-0 with a 12-4 major decision over Joseph Provini at 141. The Raiders closed the gap to 13-6 with victories at 149 and 165, but Delaware Valley took the next three weight classes for a 23-6 advantage.

The Aggie run began at 157 pounds when recent transfer Ryan Pope (Springfield) earned a 5-2 decision over Andy Martin. Returning All-American Jason Shivak followed with a 3-1 decision over Kyle Skinner at 174 pounds and fellow returning All-American Andrew Helms, ranked second nationally, picked up a 16-4 major decision over Ian Zerarfus at 184 pounds.

Jamall Johnson nearly pulled off the upset at 197 pounds but he dropped an 8-7 decision to the sixth-ranked wrestler in Division II, Corey Jacoby. Jared Dubbs ended the match by edging Delaware Valley's Mike Moore, 3-2, at heavyweight.
