Delaware Valley 36, Wagner College 15

BOSTON (MA) - Delaware Valley College ended its dual meet season by splitting a par of matches with Division I teams at Boston University. The Aggies, ranked third in Division III, opened with a 27-12 loss to the host Terriers, but followed with a 36-15 triumph over Wagner College.

Delaware Valley finished the regular season with a 14-5 record and now has two weeks to get prepared and healthy for the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championships, which will be hosted by Wilkes University on Saturday, February 19. The Aggies have won the last three conference crowns and have never won four in a row in their storied history.

Delaware Valley was without three starters on Saturday - nationally-ranked Mike Weston (125), 2004 national qualifier Dan Hall (141) and 2004 All-American Jason Shivak (174) - due to a virus that has spread around campus this week. The team did get two starters back after five missed the 20-18 loss to archrival Lycoming College on Thursday evening.

The Aggies forfeited three weight classes in the loss to Boston University, but won four of the seven matches that took place. Two-time All-American Barry Wise (133), who is ranked second in his weight class, picked up a 9-2 decision over Brett Frimer while Rick Frondorf (149) notched a 7-3 victory over Rayes Gonzales.

Nationally-ranked wrestlers Andrew Helms (fifth at 184 pounds) and Jamall Johnson (third at 197 pounds) also notched triumphs for Delaware Valley. Helms edged Tom Sforza, 2-1, while Johnson recorded a 10-8 decision over John DaCruz.

In the victory over Wagner, both teams forfeited two weight classes apiece while the Aggies won five of the six matches that took place, including three pins.

Wise dropped Adam Amster in just 89 seconds while John Powell pinned Freddy Pontoriero with 29 seconds left in the first period of their 157-pound match. Ryan Pope, who missed the Lycoming match due to the virus, returned to the lineup and pinned Vincent Vazzana in 4:21 at 165 pounds.

Frondorf earned a 15-10 victory over Mike Tutunjian and Mike Moore, who missed Thursday's match, picked up a 7-0 shutout over John Cichon at heavyweight. Helms and Johnson were awarded forfeit victories.
