Aggies Go 3-1 Against Division II Opponents At East Region Duals

SHIPPENSBURG (PA) - The Delaware Valley College wrestling team, ranked fifth in Division III, had an impressive weekend at the Shippensburg University East Region Duals as the Aggies went 3-1 against all Division II opponents, including an upset of the No. 19 team in the country.

Delaware Valley began the competition on Friday night with four pins and a 32-15 upset of nationally-ranked and tournament host Shippensburg. The Aggies then followed with a 31-12 victory over Carson-Neumann. They continued on Saturday with a 34-13 victory over Colorado School of Mines before falling by a 23-17 decision to North Carolina-Pembroke.

Delaware Valley is now 6-2 on the season with its lone defeats coming against Division II programs (No. 4 University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown and North Carolina-Pembroke. The Aggies will now travel to Cleveland State University to compete at the two-day, Division III National Duals on Saturday and Sunday, January 17 and 18.

Nationally-ranked juniors Jason Shivak and Andrew Helms each went a perfect 4-0 at the Duals. Shivak, ranked sixth in Division III at 174 pounds, had three pins and a major decision while Helms, ranked seventh at 197 pounds, picked up two pins, a major decision and a decision.

Mike Weston (125), Barry Wise (133) and Jeremy Messinger (149) notched 3-1 records over the weekend. Each of Messinger's wins were by fall while Wise, a returning All-American, entered the Duals ranked second in Division III in his weight class.

Weston and Wise notched back-to-back pins to start the upset of Shippensburg in Delaware Valley's opening match. Weston dropped James Ciccarelli in just 19 seconds while Wise downed Sonny Phillips in 88 seconds. Shivak and Josh Housekeeper (184) also recorded pins against the Raiders while Helms, Dan Hall (141) and Mike Berlanda (157) won by decisions.

The Aggies recorded three pins en route to their 19-point victory over Carson-Neumann, and had four pins in the 21-point triumph over Colorado School of Mines. Messinger, Shivak and Helms notched the falls against Carson-Neumann while Wise, Messinger, Housekeeper and Helms notched the pins against Colorado School of Mines.

Delaware Valley's quest for a perfect 4-0 came to an end with its six-point loss to North Carolina-Pembroke. The Aggies trailed 17-6 - Messinger's pin were the lone points - before Kevin Moore's decision at 165 and Shivak's pin at 174 made it an 17-15 match. However, Housekeeper dropped a controversial, 3-2 decision to the No. 2 ranked wrestler in Division II in Derek Brunson as Brunson was awarded a questionable takedown in the waning seconds.
