CLEVELAND (OH) - The Delaware Valley College wrestling team went 2-3 and finished in sixth place at the 2004 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals held at Cleveland State University.

The Aggies, who enteted the tournament ranked third in the country, began with a convincing, 32-10 victory over 21st-ranked Trinity College (CT) and followed with a 24-13 triumph over No. 17 Loras College (IA) in the semifinals. Delaware Valley faced second-ranked and NCAA Division III defending champion Wartburg College (IA) in the semifinals and suffered a 36-3 loss.

The loss dropped Delaware Valley into the consolation semifinals on Sunday where it suffered a 29-20 decision to No. 12 Simpson College (IA). The Aggies followed with a 32-9 loss to No. 5 University of Wisconsn-LaCrosse in the fifth place match.

The Aggies won of seven of the 10 weight classes against Trinity, including pins by returning All-American Barry Wise and Jeremy Messinger. Wise, who is ranked second in Division III at 133 pounds, downed William Moyet with one second left in the second period (4:59). Messinger pinned Trevor Brown in 2:32 of their 149-pound match-up. Mike Berlanda (157) registered an 18-2 technical fall victory over Eric Viani while Dan Hall (141), Jason Shivak (174) and Josh Housekeeper (184) notched major decisions. The remaining victory was a decision by Andrew Helms at 197 pounds.

The Aggies then followed with eight victories in the quarterfinals against Loras. Messinger pinned another opponent as he caught Tim Schwan 13 seconds into the second period (3:13). Wise, Hall, Berlanda and Shivak registered major decisions while Kevin Moore (165), Housekeeper and Helms won by decisions.

However, Delaware Valley's run to the National Dual championships and the top ranking in the country came to an end at the hands of the defending NCAA champs. Wartburg won nine of the 10 weight classes. The lone Aggie victory came at 174 pounds when Shivak posted an 8-1 decision over Nathan Specht. The big match-up came at 133 pounds when top-ranked Ozzie Saxon edged Wise, 11-8.

The Aggies trailed Simpson 17-9 after the first six weight classes, but Shivak and Housekeeper combined for 11 points to give Delaware Valley a 20-17 advantage. Shivak notched a 17-0 technical fall victory over Wade Samo and Housekeeper pinned Cody Downing with 10 seconds left in the first period (2:50). However, Simpson picked up a forfeit victory at 197 pounds and a pin at heavyweight to win the match.

Wise picked up a win by decision and Berlanda notched a pin in 2:30 against Simpson. Messinger nearly pulled off a major upset at 149 pounds as he went to overtime before dropping a 7-5 decision to Clint Manny, who is ranked second in Division III in the weight class.

The loss to Simpson dropped Delaware Valley to the fifth place match against Wisconsin-LaCrosse and the Aggies managed just three victories in the 10 weight classes. Mike Handelman opened the match with an 8-7 decision over Tom Tribon at 125 pounds and Wise followed with a 7-6 triumph over Nick Mueller
.
Shivak notched the remaining victory with a 6-3 decision over Nick Patenande. The junior and two-time national qualifier went a perfect 5-0 at the National Duals and is now 16-0 on the season. He may up the national rankings from his current sixth spot when the next Brute-Adidas NWCA Diviison III poll is released later this week.
