Aggies Use Six Pins To Earn Shutout In Home Opener

DOYLESTOWN (PA) - The Delaware Valley College wrestling team, ranked sixth in Division III, racked up six pins in its home opener to rout McDaniel College, 53-0, in a non-conference match.

The match featured a pair of conference champions as the Aggies (2-0) have won the last two Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) titles while the Green Terror (4-2) are the four-time defending Centennial Conference champions. However, it quickly turned into a one-sided affair with pins in the three of the first five weight classes.

The opening match saw Delaware Valley's Mike Weston trail Artie Kaehler, 9-1, in the second period before he pulled a takedown and pin in a five-second span to win the 125-pound bout.

Desmond Wiggins (133) followed with a 6-2 decision over Harry Kettner and returning All-American Barry Wise (141) posted a 17-7 decision over Mark Nakasone to up the team lead to 13-0. Wise is ranked second in Division III.

Rob Jiminez (149) and Jeremy Messinger (157) notched back-to-back pins to give the Aggies a 25-0 advantage. Jiminez downed Freddy Pontoriero in 4:07 while Messinger needed just 36 seconds to put Greg Hammack on his back.

At 165 pounds, Mike Berlanda picked up a 14-1 major decision over Mike Valentino for a 29-0 lead. Delaware Valley then registered three pins and an injury default in the final four weight classes.

Two-time national qualifier Jason Shivak stayed perfect at 6-0 as he pinned Steve Jennings in 4:39 of the 174-pound match. Two-time national qualifier and 2002 All-American Josh Houskeeper hit the mat next and owned Nathan Klunk in just 18 seconds. Housekeeper is also 6-0 on the year.

National qualifier Andrew Helms, who is ranked seventh nationally at 197 pounds took an early 2-0 lead then was awarded an injury-default victory as Ed Mecklenberg could not continue the match. He is also 6-0 on the season. Wayne Helms ended the match at heavyweight by pinning Keith English in 5:46.
