TUCSON (AZ) - Delaware Valley College notched its first win of the
season as the Aggies split a pair of games on Monday. Delaware Valley
picked up a 4-1 victory over Babson College after dropping a 12-8,
eight-inning decision to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
earlier in the day.
Senior Jennifer Bummer went the distance in the Babson (3-2) game
and allowed just one run and seven hits. She walked one and fanned
five as she improved to 1-3 on the year.
Delaware Valley (1-5) trailed 1-0 going into the sixth inning when
it took the lead for good with a pair of runs. With one out, Nicole
Dorney and Bethany Pavlik smacked back-to-back doubles to tie the
contest. Maureen Ferguson followed with a single to send Pavlik
to third and Robyn Jackson brought her home with a single.
The Aggies padded the lead in the seventh with a bases loaded walk
to Ferguson and a sacrifice fly by Jackson. Dorney finished 3-for-4
while Ferguson and Kim Harle each went 2-for-3.
Delaware Valley bounced back after a tough opener that saw the
Aggies rally from an 8-2 deficit against a Wisconsin-Eau Claire
(7-3) team that has been to the NCAA Division III playoffs the last
two years only to fall in extra innings.
Down 8-2, Pavlik smacked a three-run homer -her first and the team's
first of the season - in the bottom of the fifth to make it a three-run
ballgame. It stayed that way until the seventh and final inning
when the Aggies tied the game with three runs on one hit and three
Wisconsin-Eau Claire errors.
Kelly Andrews had an RBI single in the inning to make it 8-6. Later
in the inning, Pavlik lofted a fly ball to right field. The ball
was caught and Brittany Stockert tagged up for the seventh run and
an error by the catcher on the same play allowed Lacy Miles to race
home and tie the contest.
However, Wisconsin-Eau Claire scored four runs in the eighth, including
a two-run homer by Casey Leisgang, to take the lead for good. Leisgang
was 5-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs in the game.
Pavlik was 1-for-2 with the home run and four RBIs. Bummer took
the loss despite striking out nine in four-plus inning for relief.
Kirstyn Ruhling started and did not get out of the fourth inning.
