Moravian College 14, Delaware Valley College 0 (Game 2 - 5 innings)
DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Maria DeBonis tossed a four-hit shutout in the
first game and smacked a grand slam home run in the second to lead
national powerhouse Moravian College to a non-conference doubleheader
sweep of Delaware Valley College, 8-0 and 14-0. Both games ended
early (the first in six innings, the second in five) due to the
eight-run mercy rule.
The two teams finalized the twinbill on Sunday after both learned
that they were going to lose non-conference games due to inclement
weather and conference obligations (Delaware Valley was scheduled
to play Widener and Moravian was scheduled to play Lebanon Valley).
With the wins, the Greyhounds, who have reached the NCAA Division
III tournament in each of the last 10 years, improved to 17-5 on
the season. The Aggies fell to 6-12.
DeBonis improved to 8-3 on the year as only one baserunner reached
third in the contest. She walked three and fanned 10. DeBonis received
all of the offense she needed in the top of the first as Beth Paly
(2-for-3) notched an RBI double and a second run scored off an Aggie
error.
Delaware Valley then committed three errors in the fourth inning
which led to three runs and a 5-0 advantage. Megan Boyle (1-for-1)
knocked in the remaining three runs in the sixth with her first
home run of the season. Bethany Pavlik went 2-for-3 with a double
for Delaware Valley.
In the second game, the first three Greyhounds reached base on
a pair of singles and an Aggie error. DeBonis stepped to the plate
and put one over the right-center field fence for her third home
run of the year. Moravian then added five runs in the second, including
a two-run homer by Amanda Paulus and an RBI triple by Paly, for
a 9-0 advantage.
The Greyhounds got two more runs in the fourth on a round-tripper
by Kelly Maressa and then added three more in the fifth for the
14-0 final. Paly finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one
RBI while Maressa was 2-for-2 with three RBIs to pace the offense.
Elizabeth Python and Amie Ballo combined to hold the Aggies hitless
until the fifth when Brittany Stockert and Ashley Lynch-Giangregorio
notched singles. Python went the first three innings, fanned three
and improved her mark to 9-2.
