Delaware Valley College 4, Elizabethtown College 1 (Game 2)
DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Senior pitchers Jennifer Bummer and Kirstyn Ruhling
allowed just three hits each with Bummer picking up a shutout as
Delaware Valley College swept a non-conference doubleheader against
visiting Elizabethtown College, 3-0 and 4-1.
The opener saw Bummer improve to 6-8 on the season as she permitted
just a double in the second inning and singles in the fourth. She
walked one, fanned eight and allowed one Blue Jay to reach third
base in the game. That came in the second when Abbie Merrifield
doubled, Marian Guzik walked and the two moved up on a wild pitch.
However, Bummer got a ground out and a pop up to end the threat.
Delaware Valley (11-17) took a 1-0 in the bottom of the first as,
with two outs, Bethany Pavlik singled and then stole second. Kelly
Andrews then drove in her 23rd run of the season with an RBI single
to left field.
The Aggies padded their lead in the second as Nicole Dorney led
off with a single and Brittany Stockert beat out a bunt. After a
ground out moved the runners up, Bummer helped her own cause as
her single to left brought home Dorney. Robyn Jackson followed with
a single of her own to left field to score Stockert for a 3-0 advantage.
Andrews and Maureen Ferguson each finished 2-for-3 for Delaware
Valley. Merrifield went 2-for-3 for Elizabethtown (11-20) while
Lisa Malehorn suffered the loss as she allowed three runs and 10
hits in six innings of work.
In the nightcap, it was Ruhling's turn to dominate on the mound
as she gave up one run while the three hits by the Blue Jays were
two doubles and one single. She gave up one walk and fanned four
while earning her third win of the season.
The Aggies took the lead in the first as Jackson led off with a
walk, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. Jackson
then scored on Pavlik's sacrifice fly to right - Pavlik's team-best
26th RBI of the year.
Elizabethtown came back in the second as Merrifield led off with
a doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. Paige Turner then
hit a grounder that was booted by the Delaware Valley second baseman
for an error, but was credited with a run batted in as Merrifield
was already going to score on the play.
Delaware Valley regained the advantage for good in the second as
Christine Yacco hit the first of two doubles in the game. Lauren
Fenstermacher moved her up to third with a sacrifice bunt and Yacco
then scored on Jackson's RBI single to left field.
The Aggies then got the game's final runs in the third inning as
Dorney had a one-out single and Stockert followed with her second
home run of the season, a shot over the left field fence. It was
Stockert's lone hit of the game while Jackson and Yacco were each
2-for-3.
Merrifeld has another 2-for-3 showing for the Blue Jays. Malehorn
pitched into the second inning and took the loss while Kelsea Corrado
gave up two runs in five innings. Elizabethtown committed five errors
in the game but also pulled off a triple play with the Aggies threatening
in the fifth inning.
