Delaware Valley College 7, Drew University 0 (Game 2)
MADISON (NJ) - For the second time in three days, Delaware Valley
College senior pitchers Jennifer Bummer and Kirstyn Ruhling combined
to allow just one run as the Aggies took a pair of non-conference
games from host Drew University, 2-1 and 7-0.
On Tuesday, the duo permitted just three hits apiece with Bummer
earning a shutout in a twinbill sweep of Elizabethtown College.
This time, it was Ruhling who blanked an opponent and both pitchers
permitted just four hits apiece as Delaware Valley improved to 13-17
on the season.
The Aggies will now take their 5-5 Freedom Conference record into
Saturday's home doubleheader with Manhattanville College. They need
to just one of the two games to clinch a conference playoff berth
for the second consecutive year.
Bummer pitched the first game and the only run she gave up was
an unearned tally by the Rangers (18-18-1) and it tied the game
at 1-1 in the fifth inning. Delaware Valley had picked up its first
run on a solo home run by senior catcher Nicole Dorney. The Aggies
then took the lead for good in the fifth as yet another senior,
left fielder Maureen Ferguson, connected for a two-out RBI single.
Bummer then retired six of the last seven batters she faced to complete
her seventh win of the year.
In the nightcap, Ruhling notched win number four on the year as
she walked just one and fanned three, en route to the shutout. Delaware
Valley scored once in the second and two in the fourth for a 3-0
lead. The Aggies then padded their lead with one in the fifth and
three more in the sixth stanza.
Senior Kelly Andrews went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Dorney, who
went 2-for-3 in the opener, added two hits in four at-bats in the
nightcap. Sophomore Bethany Pavlik scored two runs and knocked in
one in a 1-for-3 showing.
