Widener University 4, Delaware Valley
College 2 (Game 1)
Widener University 6, Delaware Valley College 5 (Game 2)
CHESTER (PA) - Widener University used come-from-behind efforts
in both games to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from visiting
Delaware Valley College, 4-2 and 6-5.
The Pioneers improved their record to 19-9 while the Aggies dropped
their third and fourth games in a row and fell to 11-5 on the year.
The opener saw Delaware Valley score two times in the third inning
for a 2-0 lead. Freshman centerfielder Bethany Pavlik had the big
blow with a two-out, two-run single that scored Kim Harle and Lacy
Miles.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth when Widener scored
all four of its runs off of one hit, one error and five walks. The
one hit was two-run single by Ashlee Hutchins that gave the Pioneers
a 3-2 lead.
The Aggies put two runners in scoring position in the fifth but
could not score. They also brought the tying run to the plate with
one out in the seventh, but Kim Dougherty pitched out of the jam
for the Pioneers.
Pavlik was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to pace the Delaware Valley offense.
Jennifer Bummer started and took the loss.
Down 3-1 in the nightcap, the Aggies rallied with three runs in
the top of the fourth to take the lead. Pavlik had a solo home run
and fellow rookie Brittany Stockert hit her first collegiate home
run with a two-run shot.
Delaware Valley then added another run in the top of the sixth as
Kelly Andrews smacked her third round-tripper of the season. Widener
came back to score three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth
for a 6-5 advantage. Delaware Valley had two costly errors in the
inning and Lauren Brubaker made them pay with a two-run double.
In the seventh, Christine Yacco reached on a one-out, infield single
and, following an out, moved to second on a wild pitch. However,
Lacy Miles, who gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead with a solo home run
in the first, flew out to right to end the game.
Andrews was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI.
Kirstyn Ruhling (5-1) suffered her first loss as she allowed six
runs (three earned) and six hits in six innings.
